DeLorenzo Scores Another Dominating Win at Fonda
FONDA, NY – With a total of 168 race cars in the pit area at the Fonda Speedway on Saturday it was a full day of racing for all of the fans at the Track of Champions. When it was all said and done Matt DeLorenzo was in a very familiar spot for him as of late after winning the 40-lap $4,000 to win Modified feature event in dominating fashion in the BBL Companies sponsored, Enders powered Teo car.

The win for DeLorenzo was his seventh of the season, the 26th of his career at Fonda in the Modified division moving him ahead of the legendary Jeep Herbert into the 12th position on the Modified All Time win list, and his fifth win at Fonda in the last six racing events.

“I thought that I was in trouble early on when I got trapped down low in lap traffic,” DeLorenzo said in victory lane. “The track was taking rubber and about half way through the top went away and the only place left to run was the bottom.”

During intermission the 2009 Most Popular Driver Awards were handed out by Jim Ellis of the Leader Herald Newspaper in Gloversville, NY. The winners of the award sponsored by the Leader Herald were Jack Johnson (Modified), David Towns (Sportsman), Jeremiah Munson (602 Limited Sportsman), Kenny Gates (Pro Stock), Danny Ballard (IMCA), and Cody Bleau (Street Stock).

Also during the intermission Jack Johnson was given a picture of his #12A that was autographed by all of the drivers in the Fonda Speedway pit area. Johnson’s family along with Alton & Carole Palmer and many other friends as well joined Johnson on victory lane for the presentation.

Craig Hanson started the Modified feature on the pole and took the early lead with Jim Davis and Jeff Trombley splitting A.J. Romano for the second and third positions on lap one. Trombley dropped back in the pack as the first few laps clicked off with DeLorenzo getting by him for the fourth spot on lap four while 2009 Modified Track Champion Bobby Varin was getting by Robert Perry for the sixth position after Varin started the event in the 11th spot.

At that point the top five of Hanson, Davis, DeLorenzo, Trombley, and Ronnie Johnson were a half straightaway ahead of Varin with DeLorenzo getting by Davis for the second position on lap eight. DeLorenzo quickly caught the leader and on lap nine on the outside of turn four DeLorenzo took a lead that he would never relinquish.

DeLorenzo was running laps over a half second quicker than Hanson by lap 12 with Davis getting by Hanson for the second position at that point as Varin was taking the outside line to get around both Johnson and Hanson for the third position on lap 16. By lap 18 DeLorenzo held a half track lead while Varin was now pressuring Davis for the second spot.

With 10 laps to go DeLorenzo was caught behind the lap car of Todd Morey for a few laps before clearing Morey on lap 34 but he held such a big lead that it didn’t matter. The only caution flag in the event came out at that point for the lap car of Ancel Collins who spun in turn one but with six cars between DeLorenzo and Davis on the restart it didn’t give anyone else much of a chance for the win.

DeLorenzo took the victory over Davis, Varin, Hanson, and Johnson.
“That yellow flag helped me because it opened up the track in front of me,” DeLorenzo said. “I just had to stay on the bottom and try not to mess up.”

“This was one of our best runs of the season,” Davis said after the event. “I knew that Bobby (Varin) was behind me and with the track taking rubber early it was a one lane track so I had to be very careful not to lose the spot. I really need to thank my family as this is a true family team effort.”

“The bottom was definitely the preferred groove tonight,” Varin said. “The track took rubber early but that is daytime racing. I was able to pass some cars on the outside in the beginning of the race but it went away and left a one lane race track on the bottom.”
